CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

FOUR MORE TO GO

They couldn’t wait long. Christopher had promised Edward he would accompany him to his daughter, and he needed to follow him soon. He had to keep his word so that other echo masters who heard the story would know Christopher meant what he said.

Christopher grabbed her arm. “We have to get you back to the others.”

Ravlen couldn’t move. How many protectors were out there? Was this one waiting for them just beyond the forest edge?

And what would it do if it got her?

“Why me, Christopher? What did I do to deserve this?”

“You can’t think about it that way.” He bent to look her in eye. “It’s not just the echoes that have false logic, this whole parallel structure is based on age-old notions that have lost their meaning with time.”

“Then how can I stop it?”

“Stop the echo masters, you stop their protectors. They each have one.”

“Seven echo masters, seven protectors.”

“But remember that two have already retired to the world of the living. And we’re about to have a third.”

“If I get out of here alive.”

“I’ll make sure you do.”

With Christopher’s coaxing, Ravlen got to her feet and followed him out of the forest.

“We pulse until we’re back within the city limits. I’ll leave you there to get the others and get out.”

She took his hand without thinking. It was the only way she felt safe. Her shoulder ached from the chase, and she didn’t trust her feet to take her where she needed to go.

Christopher squeezed her hand, and they were off. In what seemed like no time they were back in the town.

“They’re over there,” Christopher said, pointing. “And none the wiser. Maybe it’s just as well.”

Ravlen suddenly felt vulnerable. “Don’t go, Christopher.”

“I have to, you know I do.”

Ravlen took in a deep breath. “I know.”

“You’re a brave girl, Ravlen. Don’t forget that.”

She nodded, more out of habit than belief.

Christopher turned and disappeared through the haze before Ravlen could say another word. She marched over to her friends, putting on a fake layer of confidence.

No point in worrying them unnecessarily. I just have to get them out.

“Check it out, Ravlen!” Marriel brought over an animal that Ravlen could swear was…

“A Pegasus?” Ravlen looked left and right for the dragon-like protector. If it were around, it could eat the Pegasus like lunch meat.

She didn’t see it anywhere.

“It’s beautiful.” Ravlen petted its mane. “But we can’t stay.”

“See this?” Daniel held out a baton.

“That’s what you asked for?” Ravlen made a face. “Hardly seems worth it. But really, we have to go…”

“Watch!” He flicked it, and the baton became a sword. He flicked it again and it was a jousting pole. Another flick and it was a bolt of lightning. He threw it at the ground.

“Quit it!” Marriel yelled. “You’re scaring Peggy.”

“I’ll be right back.” Myra ran the length of the main street in three seconds flat. “Every skill, they boost it up a notch!”

“Guys,” Ravlen rubbed her temples, “you don’t understand. We really have to go.”

“But we’re only just getting settled here.
